The Monroe Mansion was nearly destroyed due to neglect and abuse. We have brought it back better than ever with modern day luxuries. It is furnished with period antiques and decorated in historic style but functions fabulously with all new heating, electrical, plumbing & bathrooms. Our home is 2,679 sqft of delightful Victorian details. It has original woodwork, four fireplace mantles, vintage lighting, plaster medallions and corbels. The views out the front windows and porch are really lovely!
The Monroe House (c. 1889) is a work in progress. It is a very pretty historic home but its restoration is not entirely complete. We have not installed proper kitchen cabinets yet but are using fine furnishings instead! There is still some painting, refinishing and a few moulding and trim repairs to be done both inside and out. Also we have not yet been able to afford restoring the large stained glass window in the staircase chamber. On the upside the furnishings include many lovely antiques and the linens are good quality. There is new carpet and fabulous wide plank old growth redwood floors. The entirely new bathrooms are truly lovely and the showers are good and hot. In our perspective the fact that the house shows its age just adds to its charm and character but might not be everyone’s cup of tea. The house stays cool due to its high ceilings and the fact that our thermostat will not go above 70 degrees so please be prepared with warm indoor loungewear. We have heated mattress pads on every bed to keep everyone cosy at night. If you do fancy this sort of quirky but oh-so-lovely house please be our guests! We will be most grateful to you as your stay will help us to finish its restoration. This is our forever home but the renovation costs have been so steep we realized the best path to finishing the restoration is to share it with others!
The house is perfect for gathering family and friends. It has a big kitchen table, a giant dining room table and a small table in the drawing room so there are plenty of places to dine! Gatherings of more than 20 people are not allowed and excess noise, especially in the evening, will not be tolerated.
Many delightful places can be accessed on foot in Eureka but a car is recommended so that all the glorious nature can be visited as well! Parking is right in front of the entrance gate to the house. We have a Nest camera that points right at the parking spot to ensure security.
During your stay~
We welcome you to message us with any needs or questions. Just reach out to us through the Airbnb app and we can help you right away. In case there are any issues that need to be physically addressed we will have our neighbor/handyman come over. Every once in a while, our neighbor/handyman may need to enter the yard to do landscaping and watering but we will message you well in advance so that we donāt interfere with your privacy. We are taking the highest precautions in security and cleaning to make sure the Grand Townhouse is a safe and comfortable environment. Your enjoyment during your stay is our number one priority!
We really enjoy our lovely spot here in Eureka. Across G street from our place is the gorgeous Zanone House which has a beautiful bird filled park. Just around the block is the best bistro in Humboldt-Brick&Fire. Walking down to Old Town via G St is an architectural delight! It’s a 12 block walk (1 mile, 5 min drive) but we love it so much we walk it several times a week.
Even though there is much that is accessible by foot you’ll want to have a car so you can get to all the gorgeous beaches, beautiful vistas and fabulous hiking, surfing, bird watching and climbing spots that the Redwood Coast has to offer. There is plenty of parking on the street directly in front of the G Street entrance to the Monroe House.
The Monroe House is a duplex. We have another Airbnb inside the Monroe House which is titled Victorian Townhome within the Historic Monroe House. It is listing #46617726 (We are not currently renting it out on Airbnb.) The Victorian Townhome has its own private entrance gate and private yard on the other side of the house. Occasional noise will not be loud but will sometimes be noticeable. Since this house is over 130 years old, sound does carry from one side of the house to the other. Therefore guests will occasionally hear muffled speaking, doors shutting and showers running ect. Please be aware that painting and small repairs might possibly be continuing on the other side of the house a few days during business hours.
If you would like to know more about our house we have a social media account that chronicles the restoration of it.
